Many of today's smartphones (like the iPhone) use what is called a rolling shutter in their cameras. This means that they capture the image similar to a scanner, recording the image as it hits the sensor from left to right. It's done to save on processing power for low end devices. This results in some interesting effects when an object is moving faster than the image capture is happening, and has made it's way into some videos (since the smartphones use the same image sensor for stills as they do videos).

So if any of you follow my Twitter, you'll know that when the iPad came out I resolutely mocked it. "A netbook that can't multitask, can't print, can't do x and costs $500?!," I said. And don't even get me started on that horrid name. The next generation will be called the Max-iPad, no matter what Apple does. Well call me a reformist. After playing with a friends off and on, I broke down and got one. Of course this is after a month long wait while it was on back-order. Once I received it I loaded it to the hilt with goodies. I've had mine for about 6 weeks now and I thought I would blog about how I use it, both professionally and for entertainment. To start off on a serious note, let's take a look at the non-game apps.

Professional Uses

Personal Information Management - Because I use Google products (GMail, Calendar, Contacts) I can link up my iPad to this information source as a central information repository. Whatever you do, don't link your iPad to Google with the GMail option. This uses IMAP instead of a more fluid Exchange protocol, and doesn't work for contacts and calendar. Instead, add your Google goodness with the Exchange option. Follow this Google Support document to get push notifications of email and perfect sync of calendars and contacts working.

Reeder - I also use Google Reader to keep tabs on about 45 RSS feeds (some of which are on my Blogroll on the right side). Reeder is by far the best and most elegant app to tackle Google Reader. Unique movements let you star and keep things unread, as well as built-in sharing of items and full item access. It also comes with caching, a must for the 3G-less iPad like mine. Load up your list of unread items (generally at around 170 each morning for me) and it will download full copies of them for reading offline. Perfect for that train ride in to work every morning.

Craigsphone - An excellent way to check in on Craigslist for new freebies or for sale items in your area.

Discover - This app, written by Cooliris, lets you stumble down everyone's favorite time wasting rabbit-hole, Wikipedia. It will open up with the random featured article of the day and let you link away from there in a gorgeous fashion. You can also search for articles by topic or find related items using swipe gestures.

Flipboard - Similar to Reeder, Flipboard is a site aggregator that relies on twitter feeds for various established journals, like Wired, GOOD, etc. It's heavily integrated with Twitter but functions similar to Discover in taking links and formatting them in a nice magazine style read.

Bloomberg - A minimalist implementation from Bloomberg lets you focus on your financial data and not fancy flourishes. It feels very elegant in its design though, and lets you access a wealth of data for free.

Epicurious - Cooks will love this app, with gorgeous full detail pictures, shopping lists, and detailed instructions that come with a marker you can slide down the page to keep track of where you're cooking. I've been tempted to get a dock in the kitchen just to keep my iPad in while I cook with this excellent app.

Twitterrific - I love TweetDeck on the desktop. For some reason the iPad implementation falls flat for me. Maybe it's something about the column work flow that just doesn't go on the iPad. Twitterrific fills that gap and quite splendidly.

Media

Kindle - While the iBooks app is free, I like the Kindle app because it comes with Amazon's huge library, competitive pricing, and a purchase made in Kindle will show up on my Kindle, my PC app, my Android app, and my iPad all at one price. It also keeps a sync of where I read to last across all those devices, so no more page turning when I pick it up somewhere else.

AirVideo - There is a free version of this app but the full version is a must for those who don't like to watch their downloaded videos just at home. The two things I love about this app are the live conversion and the network play. Live Conversion means no more ripping videos with Handbrake, hoping you got it right. If the video can be played on your computer, chances are the Live Conversion will work, streaming the video in its native format to your iPad. Network Play means I don't have to be on the same network as my media server to watch videos. I can tunnel across the internet to my home PC and get videos I've recorded from TV and stream them to my iPad anywhere in the world. No more ripping and mashing formats at the cost of CPU cycles and your time, or having to preload your device with the media you want. Just sweet streaming.

Netflix - Streaming movies and TV shows from their ever growing catalog. What's more to say?

NPR - I love to keep up with the news on the go, but many news providers' websites are clunky on the iPad. NPR wrote an interface for their website tailored to the iPad, along with built-in story streaming and local station live streaming. Great way to stay up on things.

Pandora - I used to be a devotee of Last.fm. Pandora just seems to be working better these days for me, whether it's improvements to their algorithm or something else I don't know. It's just a good one to have to keep the music flowing.

Games

The real reason we have iDevices - they're shiny and fun. My favorite games:

Dismount - What's more fun than pushing a dummy, with optional Facebook friend's profile picture on their face, down a tower of stairs? Nothing I tell you.

Enigmo 2 - This is a fun 3D puzzler that requires you to aim drops of water, plasma, and lasers through obstacle courses to the goal. Fun and challenging.

FlightCtrl HD - Land those planes in 60s PanAm style!

GraviLux - There are a thousand apps like this in the store but it's pretty and a great way to kill time.

iShoot 2 - The classic Tank v Tank game, requiring you to adjust angle and power to hit your enemy across a battlefield.

Osmos HD - A gorgeous game where half the joy comes from looking at the beautiful bubble things before you chase them down and absorb them.

Pottery - The interface is a tad clunky but it's fun to sculpt pots and fire them. It has a mission mode where you try to recreate pots for customers but I like to make the most obscenely large and ugly pots possible and see how much I can sell them for.

Scrabble - I play Scrabble on Facebook so this is a mobile interface to keep up on those games. There's also a "pass and play" mode where you can hand the iPad around to play with a group, computer play, and local network play. Similar to Words HD.

Splode - A chain reaction game where you time the poke to make the little flower spores pop in colors. Perfect for disgruntled allergy sufferers.

Sudoku2HDPro - Aside from the ugly name it's the most finished Sudoku game interface I've experienced among the other apps. A built-in scoring mechanism lets you track your progress too.

Tetari - This somewhat overlooked game is a variant on Tetris, where your goal is to remove the colored tiles from the board. There are a few different modes in this game that keep it interesting, and it's a great time killer too.

Zen Bound 2 - The most beautifully executed game, even topping Osmos (but only barely). The goal is to wrap a rope around a carved wooden object. You have to cover a certain percentage of the surface area of the object to finish the level. The way the object is carved requires some planning though or you might block off a large section of the object from being covered.

Part of my daily job is working on making my company's ERP NetSuite conform to our end goals. Often this involves a hammer and strings of cursing. I thought I would blog some of my solutions that I post to the NetSuite User Group in case someone is searching around for tips and can't get inside that forum.

One of the most daunting tasks, and obscene oversights on NetSuite's part, is manual inventory adjustments. Apparently no one thought that, when doing an annual inventory count, that large numbers of inventory counts would need to be imported. So it's currently unavailable to do so. This means manually (and correctly) typing in an inventory adjustment for every single item that needs to be changed. For companies like mine that have 20,875 SKUs at last count, that's a whole lot of typing and an error rate of 4% (average) means 835 errors. Too many, too costly.

In an attempt to automate this process I have been fiddling with using iMacros to fill in Inventory Adjustment Worksheets in NetSuite. Since there is no import method, I've had to resort to recording a macro to fill in this page with data I fed it, as we often have several thousand lines to do. iMacros is a Firefox Extension that lets you script movements for pages, and lets you source data fields from a CSV file if needed.

Some prerequisites:

Under Set Preferences for my user I have set the Maxiumum Entries in Dropdowns to 0 so as to eliminate all possible dropdowns.

If you want to put spaces in anything it's typing in, you have to use <SP>.

I have customized the Adjust Inventory Worksheet sublist to include the item Name filter box. Click the small grey Customize button, go to the Additional Filters tab, and check the box next to Name to add this on. This lets iMacros fill in the item it's working on to clear all others out of the list.

The WAIT lines I have included are to allow NetSuite's JS to catch up to the fields being filled in. If your screen is running faster than mine is then you can probably lower those a tad.

We have multilocation inventory enabled so the location box is a unique problem. I tried scripting the page to default that box to an option but it didn't take. iMacros lets you script clicking based on the X/Y axis but I can't seem to get that to work either. Right now I have a 4 second wait plugged in so I can pick the location from the dropdown. If you can figure out how to fix this then this will be entirely automatic (and please let me know!). I've tried SuiteScripting and manipulating it through the macro but neither seem to take.

My CSV file has Item Name in column one, Quantity in column three, and New Value in column 5. New Value consists of quantity times unit cost. You can comment out the COL5 line if you are fine accepting the unit cost inside of NS and don't need to redefine it. You don't need to put <SP> in your CSV, just in anything you code.
You'll need Firefox and to install the iMacros extension. Sign into NS and load up an Inventory Worksheet page. Make sure you have setup the prerequisites as above.
My scripted iMacro code:

VERSION BUILD=6700624 RECORDER=FX
TAB T=1
CMDLINE !DATASOURCE DnQty.csv
'Give iMacros your CSV file. This file is stored in documents/iMacros/Macros. Do not put disk pointers (C:\Folder) on this line.
SET !DATASOURCE_COLUMNS 5
'Must set the number of columns present in your CSV
SET !LOOP 2
SET !DATASOURCE_LINE {{!LOOP}}
'These two lines tell it to skip the header row in your CSV and to loop past that.
TAG POS=1 TYPE=INPUT:TEXT FORM=NAME:main_form ATTR=ID:trandate CONTENT=6/30/10
'Put in your transaction date
TAG POS=1 TYPE=INPUT:TEXT FORM=NAME:main_form ATTR=ID:account_display CONTENT=5301
'Put in your Adjustment Account
WAIT SECONDS=4
'TAG POS=1 TYPE=INPUT:TEXT FORM=NAME:main_form ATTR=ID:location CONTENT=Location1
'I'm having a hard time scripting in the location drop down. If you can get it to work let me know! I just put in a 4 second delay so I could pick it manually.
TAG POS=1 TYPE=INPUT:TEXT FORM=NAME:invt_main_form ATTR=ID:Item_NAME CONTENT={{!COL1}}
'
WAIT SECONDS=2
TAG POS=1 TYPE=DIV ATTR=ID:div__body
ONDIALOG POS=1 BUTTON=OK CONTENT=
TAG POS=1 TYPE=INPUT:TEXT FORM=NAME:invt_form ATTR=ID:invt_invtnewqty1_fs CONTENT={{!COL3}}
WAIT SECONDS=1
TAG POS=1 TYPE=INPUT:TEXT FORM=NAME:invt_form ATTR=ID:invt_invtnewvalue1_fs CONTENT={{!COL5}}
TAG POS=1 TYPE=INPUT:SUBMIT FORM=ID:main_form ATTR=ID:submitter
'Submits the Inventory Worksheet form
WAIT SECONDS=1
TAG POS=1 TYPE=INPUT:BUTTON FORM=ID:main_form ATTR=ID:new
'Makes a new Inventory Worksheet form since this page doesn't have the Save & New functionality.
WAIT SECONDS=1

Save this as a *.iim file in Documents\iMacros\Macros and it will show up in the list on your sidebar. Click Play (Loop) and it will go to town on your CSV file. Make sure to set the Max to how many lines there are in your CSV for it to finish them all.
